What you need to know…
OU crushed the Cornhuskers 62-28 last season, giving Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini his first taste of the once-heated rivalry. The contention between the two teams has faded in recent years because the teams no longer play each other every year, but both teams have made it very clear they need no help getting excited for the “Battle of the Big Reds.”
This is the first time the Sooners have traveled to Lincoln since 2005, when OU escaped with a 31-24 win. The last time OU lost to Nebraska was in 2001, when both teams were ranked in the nation’s top five. No. 3 Nebraska defeated No. 2 OU 20-10, helping send the Cornhuskers to the BCS National Championship, where they lost to Miami.
Who to watch...
Against Kansas State last week, Dejuan Miller helped solidify his place as the Sooners’ No. 2 receiver opposite Ryan Broyles. Miller led OU with nine catches for 94 yards and a touchdown, and helped win a surprisingly close battle against the Wildcats. Quarterback Landry Jones will need to make use of all of his targets against Nebraska. The Cornhuskers have given up less than 270 total yards per game, which ranks second in the Big 12.
The Nebraska defense is led by defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, possibly the best defensive lineman in college football. He is quick and powerful, and has consistently driven blockers into the backfield to disrupt running plays or collapse the pocket around quarterbacks. Suh is the focal point, but the entire Nebraska defensive line is likely the best OU will face this season. For the ‘Huskers to take down OU, they will have to shut down the run and force Landry Jones to beat them.
