SAND SPRINGS, Oklahoma – On the second play of the third quarter against Enid, Sand Springs quarterback Johnny Deaton broke his collarbone, presumably costing him his senior season.
“We had a first down, he was just going down to avoid a tackle and fell on his right shoulder. You could just tell,” said Sandite head coach Dustin Kinard.
Deaton, who according to many is the top quarterback in the state, committed to Oklahoma State in February. The injury shouldn’t change his plans to graduate early and enroll at OSU for the spring semester.
“He’ll be there in January competing for the starting spot. That’s the kind of kid he is,” said coach Kinard. “He’s just had a run of bad luck.”
Stepping in for Sand Springs is untested sophomore Darrack Harger, who will get his first full game of action next week at Stillwater High School.
