FORT GIBSON, Oklahoma – The undefeated Sallisaw Black Diamonds (6-0, 3-0) got their first scare of the season Friday night in Fort Gibson.
Trailing 11-3 at the half, the Black Diamonds lost the toss and kicked off to Fort Gibson (3-3, 1-2). The Tigers marched the ball down the field and extended their lead to ten on an Andrew Arnold touchdown pass to junior running back Gannon Whitley.
The offense couldn’t get things going for Sallisaw. The Tigers' defense forced the Black Diamonds to punt on each possession in the third quarter, and Sallisaw went into the fourth quarter trailing on the road.
In the beginning of the fourth, the defense came alive for Sallisaw. Arnold threw an interception, and Sallisaw returned the ball for a score to pull back to within three points, 18-15.
The team could have folded after giving up a long 70-yard touchdown pass from Arnold to senior Aaron Miller on the first play of the ensuing possession for Fort Gibson. The score gave the Tigers a 25-15 lead.
Sallisaw didn’t fold. The Black Diamonds came back to force overtime and picked up a game-winning field goal to remain unbeaten in 2009. The win bumps the Black Diamonds to 6-0. They will host Poteau next week. The Tigers drops back to .500 for the first time since Week 2 and will host Hilldale next Friday.
