JENKS, Oklahoma -- The clock has just ticked past 7:00 a.m. at the Jenks football team’s summer workouts.
It would be easy to feel tired and cranky at that hour but Trojans wide receiver Steven Carpenter is acting the exact opposite -- you can feel the energy and enthusiasm.
“I feel really good about our chances but it’s going to be all about how we work and come out every game,” Carpenter said. “We can’t take off -- we don’t have the team to be able to take off -- I’m not saying we don’t have the talent, but hey even when you have talent you have to be able to work every day.”
Carpenter’s coming off a year where he made 25 catches and scored four touchdowns. The offseason has given him time to work on the finer points of his game.
“The biggest difference for me is understanding defenses, understanding leverage and where I have to get in order to get the ball, understanding the yard depth, understanding the guy that I’m playing against,” Carpenter says, “kind of growing up a bit and kind of coming of age and being a smarter player out there and not just relying on my talent.”
Carpenter doesn’t have any scholarship offers yet, but Arkansas, Colorado State, New Mexico, Houston, SMU and Arkansas State have all shown interest.
“I feel like I’m getting close to my first offer, but I just have to keep working hard and put the work in on the field and it’ll all come,” Carpenter said.
