OKLAHOMA CITY -- A controversial proposal is heading to the Oklahoma City Council for a vote Tuesday to approve a $7 million urban race course.
Two members of the group trying to bring the race to Oklahoma City, Trent Ward and Brad Lund, stopped by the Blitz Sunday night to talk to Dean Blevins and John Holcomb.
The group – Oklahoma City Grand Prix – is expected to repay the $7 million dollars over the span of 10 years, only five of which are guaranteed to have a race in the city.
“Oklahoma City shows to be one of the best special events markets in the country,” said Ward, the chairman of Oklahoma City Grand Prix. “If I didn’t feel like we were going to do an awesome job and this was going to be a great event for Oklahoma City, I wouldn’t have put the last nine months of my time and money into this event.”
Lund, who is known in the Oklahoma City sports scene for his 16-year tenure with the Oklahoma City Blazers, expects the college football environment that the state is famous for to show up for the races.
“Imagine moving an OU football game to downtown Oklahoma City,” said Lund. “The ambience on the grounds could be record setting. Our early projections show 80,000-100,000 fans over the course of the three day period.”
Ward is confident that the council will approve the race course and the event will flourish in the market.
“Oklahoma City’s council has been shown to promote great events,” said Ward. “The council has shown time and time again that when progress comes before them, they pass it. And it passes with flying colors and it does great.”
