EDMOND, Oklahoma -- Any time a sophomore sees the football field for the varsity squad, it’s a sign that he has a bright future in front of him.
When a sophomore sees the field as much as Trevan Smith does, you know the Edmond Santa Fe Wolves have a special talent on their hands.
“He can run the ball out of the backfield, he can catch, he’s already leading the team in interceptions and he can return some kicks and punt,” said Edmond Santa Fe head coach Bruce Gowan. “Trevan is a very multi-talented athlete for us, so we try to use him as much as we can wherever we can.”
The role is something the sophomore utility man is ok with.
“It shows that they trust me and they think I can get it done,” Smith said. “And I can get it done.”
It’s not only the coaches’ trust in his abilities that gets him on the field as often as he is, his versatility allows the Wolves flexibility in their game plan as well.
“You can be real multiple offensively without having to run personnel [onto the field],” said. “People can’t anticipate what personnel is on the field.”
The young Wolves have yet to notch a win this season and with a young squad the duties to lead the team fall on players like Smith, who approaches the role in his own way.
“I don’t talk as much, I just show by example,” said Trevan Smith. “Hopefully that will do enough.”
